My One Word {2017}

Happy New Year friends! With each January comes grace I find, space to rest and to start anew, to let go of the mistakes and to hope again for the future. The last few years I’ve embraced the idea of choosing one word to frame the coming year instead of countless resolutions that I’d no doubt give up on two weeks in (you can find last year’s here).

As I’ve been thinking lately on life and all I have hoped for the next year for myself, for my little family and for this blog, I’ve settled on a few words that I adore and which I plan to make priorities in the coming months:

On Prioritizing Rest

DSC09876

I tend towards being task-oriented. I love to do lists and feeling like I’m getting things done. And life these days, friends, is full. The thing is, I don’t think it gets any less full as time goes on; more babies are born, kids grow up, new commitments are taken on, new challenges are faced. Before we know it we look up and time has just flown by without us noticing.

To Remember {18 Months}

Bubs you amaze me. I love watching you learn things, new ones everyday lately it seems. Today you figured out there were tractors on your pajama pants and spent the ride home pointing at them and making car noises. Last weekend you learned how to give awkward toddler hugs to your new friend and I got all the warm fuzzies inside.

When it Seems Like a Big Deal

DSC08178

You know the feeling: When you’ve left something for so long and thought about it and thought about it and each time you do, it grows and becomes this thing that gets bigger and bigger in your mind. You avoid it because what’s another day and then another and by the time you get around to it or have to do it you feel like you have to say it perfectly, write it perfectly, do it perfectly. You’ve built up unrealistic expectations of yourself and of others and are bound to be disappointed. This is me today. And so instead of putting off writing until I can compose the perfect post I’m just writing, moving forward, giving myself a little grace knowing that wobbly steps in the direction you’re meant to go is better than staying still.

Anyone else in the same boat lately? What have you been putting off that you just need to do, say, begin?

The Way We Did // On Going Back to Work

YOU NEED TO KNOW: I absolutely believe there is no one way to parent. Every family is different and every child, and that’s a beautiful thing. I encourage you to parent the way you feel is right and the way you feel will work for your family at the time in which you’re at. Parenting is hard work, friends; let’s choose only to encourage each other and walk alongside each other, babies in one arm and laundry baskets in the other…

Between Christmas and New Year’s

Friends, it’s been awhile.  Hoping you had a peace- and joy-filled Christmas. Ours was so so restful and my heart is so full.

As the year ends I’m looking forward to a fresh start with an expectation of new adventures and good things to come. I used to write out New Years resolutions but, let’s face it, I failed at most of them only weeks (if that long) into January. And who knows that once you’ve failed it’s hard to find the motivation to dust yourself off and try it again?

Untitled

I was planning to write about our vanagon this week… It’s been a dream of mine for a long time to own one and I’m thrilled we do. And I will introduce you to him at some point soon, but my heart is too heavy and today is not the day.

Today is for mourning with people everywhere who’ve experienced loss… of family, of friends, of peace. It’s for holding our loved ones a little closer and telling them they mean the world to us. For linking arms with our neighbors and holding each other up as we walk forward through this complicated life. For thinking on the beautiful things in our lives and being so so thankful. It’s for not giving up hope and for refusing to let the darkness win.

Today is for the little things like changing our facebook profile pictures because it’s the only way we know to show our brothers and sisters that from across the earth: we see you, we mourn with you, we pray with you, we stand with you. It’s for reflecting on our lives and for figuring out what’s really important, then choosing to make time for that regardless of what it takes. It is for putting aside our pride and our differences and for speaking and showing only love.

Hello Fall

DSC05774

My heart is full in the fall. I find joy in the gatherings that happen so often as it begins to cool outside and the days get shorter, ushering people indoors and into closer proximity to one another. I love talking about life one on one over hot cups of tea wrapped up in blankets on the porch swing and listening to the rain as much as I do having the house full of people where laughter and helping hands abound.
